The expressive therapies allow children and adults to broaden their communication and show themselves more fully by externalizing worries and concerns through symbols, metaphor, or metaphor language. Often expressive technique ignite creative energy which can be powerful in and of itself. When families in pain begin to play together, perceptions of each other are changed, communication is accomplished in less direct ways, and individuals experience a decrease in resistance. Through laughter and play, endorphins are released and feelings of well being emerge.
I have continued to study about research findings and best practices that appear to be useful in helping our clients. But instead of defining only one way to work, I integrate state of the art therapy strategies that continue to become anchored in good research.
Mine is a life-long dedication to working with traumatized children. I cannot fathom doing anything else. I remain in awe of the reparative process that is ignited in those who sustain injuries. I am rewarded daily by the trust placed in me to witness and accompany clients on their healing paths.
Many of my colleagues who work in this field have found it necessary to change professions after enduring the stressors inherent in working with child abuse. I have gained harmony and balance by being a clinician who writes, teaches, supervises, consults, conducts research, and develops programs. It is very rewarding to provide assistance to Spanish-speaking clients in our native tongue.
I am thrilled to visit Ecuador yearly and embrace my biculturalism fully. I am also honored to have worked in the East and West Coasts (California, MD, and VA).
Tennis is my second passion. I play as much as my body allows, captain a few teams, and I have participated in local, regional, and national competitions.
I have a full and balanced life, enjoy a long-term marriage, live near my family of origin (mother and brothers), and have a faithful four-legged companion. I look forward to paths not yet taken.
